The Senior Product Designer is responsible for creating innovative and refined product designs, preparing detailed layouts, and revising assembly drawings. They ensure accurate tolerances, fits, calculations, and material specifications, working from detailed sketches provided by engineers to develop and refine product concepts. Playing a pivotal role in product development, they contribute throughout the design lifecycle—from concept creation to final production—while understanding the functional requirements of new products or mechanical systems. This role also includes prototyping, presenting designs during reviews, and providing guidance to a team of Product Designers with minimal input from engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop 2D and 3D CAD models to support research and design teams in creating new and improving existing products.
- Evaluate and refine designs, ensuring components and assemblies meet engineering standards.
- Create effective mechanical concepts and drawings that align with project goals.
- Document designs for manufacturability and provide internal and external support for manufacturing processes.
- Apply advanced knowledge of geometric dimensioning, tolerancing, design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), and manufacturing inspection processes.
- Support engineering teams by managing engineering change notices (ECNs) and creating Bills of Material using ERP and PLM systems.
- Collaborate with tech services and sales teams to provide technical support.
- Prepare advanced 3D models and drawings using tools such as Advanced Surfacing, Circuit Works, and FEA in SolidWorks.
- Conduct competitor analysis, research product specifications, and liaise with vendors as needed.
- Manage the design process, including dimensioning, prototyping, and documenting results.
- Proactively anticipate and resolve design challenges.
- Coach and mentor team members, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in training on new design technologies and methodologies.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Associate degree in Mechanical Drafting, Engineering Design Technology, or a related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
- 7+ years of experience in product/mechanical design, including expertise in 3D CAD design and product layout.
- Certified SolidWorks Professional with advanced proficiency.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Advanced understanding of ERP and ECN/PLM systems.
- In-depth knowledge of ASME Standards, ISO 9000, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, DFMA principles, and manufacturing/inspection processes.
- Experience with Advanced Surfaces, Circuit Works, and/or FEA simulation.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Drafting, Engineering Design Technology, or a related field.
- Certification in ASME Standards and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical/product design.
- Familiarity with various manufacturing processes, including plastic injection molding, metal machining, casting, and sheet metal fabrication.
